RICHMOND, Ky. - The Marshall University baseball team dropped a midweek nonconference tilt to Eastern Kentucky, 10-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.
Marshall (10-13) outhit EKU (12-11) 12-11, but the Colonels scored two-or-more runs in four different innings to claim the victory.
The Thundering Herd scored the first run of the game in top of the second when Kurt Lipton crossed home on a RBI groundout by Nathan Gomez. EKU responded quickly scoring twice in the second and three more times in the fourth to chase Herd starter Mike Cavalli (1-2) from the game.
Down 7-1 entering the sixth frame, the Herd mounted a comeback scoring three times in the inning. The Herd loaded the bases thanks to two walks and a hit by pitch with one down. James Lavinskas hit a sac fly and later Kenny Socorro knocked a two-run single to center, putting the Herd within three, 7-4.
After the Colonels pushed across a run in the seventh, MU tallied two more runs thanks to RBI singles from Thor Meeks and Kirby Pellant. Unfortunately, EKU scored two more times in the bottom of the inning and kept the Herd off the scoreboard in the ninth to preserve the 10-6 victory.
Lipton finished 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Pellant laced two hits and one RBI.
EKU used a total of eight pitchers to keep the Herd off balance as Austin Rexroat (2-1) earned the win.
The Herd hosts the Memphis Tigers for the first home Conference USA series at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va., this weekend. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.
