CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Kurt Lipton connected for a homer and drove in three runs and Ben Jurevicius collected three base hits, but Southern Miss used a seven-run second inning and held on to defeat the Marshall University baseball team 16-7 on Friday afternoon in Conference USA action at Appalachian Power Park.

Lipton went 2-for-4 with his seventh homer as Marshall falls to 13-20 overall and 4-6 in C-USA play. Ben Jurevicius finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Kirby Pellant slapped two base knocks as the Herd will look to even the series Saturday at 2:05 p.m.

Southern Miss (18-14, 2-5 C-USA) pounded out 18 hits, including five homers to capture the first game of series with the Thundering Herd. Leftfielder Kameron Brunty led the Golden Eagles with a 3-for-4 day, including two homers and six RBI.

The Black and Gold struck first in the first as Brunty blooped a two-out single to left, plating leadoff hitter Dillon Day to take the early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, the Herd answered back with two runs of its own. Pellant began the frame by drawing a walk and came around to score when Lipton hit a soaring two-run deep fly to give MU the one-run advantage.

The long ball was utilized heavily by the Golden Eagles in the second against Herd starter Ian Kadish (1-3). USM touched home seven times in the inning, which included three homers, capped off by three-run shot off the bat of Brunty to own an 8-2 cushion.

The Herd placed a crooked number on the scoreboard to fight its way back into the game, tallying a four-spot off USM's Scott Copeland (5-0). Josh Valle started the hit parade with a double to left and later came home on a RBI ground out from Thor Meeks. Kenny Socorro drove in a run with a ground out and Victor Gomez laced a two-out two-run base knock to centerfield to put MU within a pair of runs, 8-6.

USM tacked on another run in the top of the third thanks to a RBI single from Day along with a run in the fourth and four more runs in the fifth.

The Golden Eagles added a pair of runs in the eighth when Marc Bourgeois hit a two-run homer to right-center field to round out the scoring.

Kevin Shackelford produced a strong outing of the Herd bullpen. The junior worked 2.0 innings allowing only one base hit.
