ATHENS, Ohio - The Marshall University baseball team received a homer and three RBI from Victor Gomez and a three-hit game from Kenny Socorro, but Ohio scored seven times in the first frame to knock off the Thundering Herd, 15-5 on Wednesday night at Bob Wren Stadium.
MU received two hits apiece from Kurt Lipton, V. Gomez, Thor Meeks and Kris Hecktor as the team dropped to 11-16 on the season. Ohio pounded out 18 base knocks and Michael Dillon (1-3) fired 4.1 innings out of the pen to earn the win and improve the team to 4-22 overall.
The Bobcats erupted in the first inning for seven runs on six hits to chase MU starter Ryan Kiel (0-1) in favor of Ben Jurevicius. The righty came in and produced a strong outing, tossing 2.1 innings surrendering just two hits with four strikeouts.
V. Gomez launched his eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot, in the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-2. Ohio answered right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.
After the Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, V. Gomez brought Socorro home, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
MU hits the road for a three-game Conference USA series at UAB, starting Friday at 6:30 EST.
