Track and Field Grabs First Place Finishes at Ohio Open

ATHENS, Ohio - As a tune-up for the Conference USA Championship meet next weekend, six girls from the Marshall University women's track & field team participated in the Ohio Open Saturday afternoon, with three of them taking first place finishes.
Freshmen Vanessa Jules and Amanda Kennedy continue to build upon their fantastic first year at Marshall as Jules won the high jump and Kennedy won the javelin.
Jules crushed the field as she posted a height of 1.70m, while the next closest competitor was at 1.53m. Kennedy, the school record holder in the javelin, won the event with a throw of 41.33m which was more than a meter ahead of second place.
Sophomore Rachel Coaxum tied for first place in the 100 meter hurdles as she and Brittany Tyree of Ohio University each ran a time of 15.16. Coaxum doubled back in the triple jump and took second place with her best jump of 10.55m.
Alecia Daniels finished second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.26, and Lauren DeHays placed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 5.08m. Kristin Smith did not conclude her jumps as she left the competition due to injury.
The Thundering Herd invades Orlando next weekend for the C-USA Championship hosted by the University of Central Florida. The meet is scheduled for May 13-16.
