HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The women's soccer team at Marshall University will host its only preseason match of the 2010 season on the friendly confines of Sam Hood Field on Saturday, August 14 at 7 p.m., against the VMI Keydets.
The Thundering Herd reported 28 players to camp. Eight starters return from last season's roster, a team that went 12-7 to record the highest win total in program history. Eight newcomers join the squad this season, including freshmen goalkeepers Lexa Hughes (Everett, Wash) and Caroline Harwell (Mooresville, N.C.) who look to battle Lindsey Kerns (Hurricane, W.Va.) for time between the pipes.
Marshall will have eight days following its preseason matchup to prepare for its opening game at Cleveland State on August 22nd. The Herd defeated the Vikings last season 2-0 to begin a seven game win-streak.
"We are excited to start the season" head coach Kevin Long said. "We have a lot of new faces amongst our largest roster in school history," Long continued. "We are eager to have a quality opponent in VMI come in and help us develop a pecking order in our roster."
VMI completed the 2009 season at 7-10-3 and finished fifth in the Big South. The Keydets return seven starters from last year's roster and add five newcomers.
