HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team competed in the annual Green & White Match on Sunday afternoon inside the Cam Henderson Center. The scrimmage served as a chance for the Thundering Herd to gain some live game-action experience prior to the team's first tournament of the season, the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
The team played a total of four sets, with the entire squad getting the opportunity to show off their skills and abilities in front of Herd fans.
"A positive coming out of the scrimmage is that we as coaches we are able to make some final decisions as to where we need to be in the lineup," head coach Mitch Jacobs said.
Preseason All-Conference USA selection Elizabeth Fleming, senior, produced at the setter position, dishing out 40 assists and adding 10 digs en route to a double-double. Classmate Elizabeth Herman also had an impressive outing, putting away 13 kills along with six digs and five service aces.
Juniors Kelley Bugler and Cameron Yoho each made strong contributions in the middle. Yoho produced a 12-kill performance, while Bugler slammed down 10 kills of her own. Freshman Sacha Byous-McConnell also registered a double-digit kill match with 12.
"On the real positive signs was the play of Sacha (Byous-McConnell) tonight," Jacobs said. "She had seven swings in a two-game stretch and put five away with only one error along with two blocks. That is a big positive for us."
"Kelley Bugler added a lot of energy on the court," Jacobs said. "She has put herself in the position to have a spot in the rotation."
Defensively, freshman Lanti Cole tallied a match-best 18 digs, while Lexy Kessel chipped in with 14 digs and five service aces. Katy Schad collected 14 digs at the libero position over the four sets and Laura Der added nine kills and eight digs on the afternoon.
"Another big positive was Lanti Cole, stepping out and leading the match in digs and was all over it," Jacob said. "Lexy Kessel played one of her best days in preseason. Today she loosened up and got after it and served very well."
The Herd will begin the regular season on Friday, August 27 at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind. MU will compete against tournament-host Notre Dame, Arizona and Cal Poly.
