ROCK HILL, S.C.- The Marshall University women's soccer team travels to Rock Hill, S.C. to take part in the Winthrop Invitational. The Thundering Herd will open the tournament Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m. EST against the host Eagles and will follow on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1:00 p.m. EST against Liberty. All matches will be played at Eagle Field.

"We are eager to get down to Winthrop, we have two good games," head coach Kevin Long said. "Winthrop is a well coached team and Liberty is a strong team coming out of Virginia."

"After our lose at Cleveland State we're looking to get some different players in the games and learn a little bit more about ourselves this weekend," Long continued.

MU enters the weekend after dropping its season-opener 3-2, to Cleveland State. The Herd fell behind early, leaving themselves a 2-0 deficit at halftime. A Katie Ball (Louisville, Ky.) header, off an Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) cross cut the lead in half. However, it would not stay that way for long. The Viking's Jessica McCloy retaliated with a header of her own to score the eventual game-winner and give Cleveland State a two goal cushion. DeSumma would add a goal in the 76th minute but that is as close as the Herd would come. DeSumma ended with a goal and an assist, while accumulating a game-high four shots on the afternoon, placing all four on goal.

Winthrop was trailing 1-0 in its season-opener against Georgia Southern before it was cancelled due to weather. The Eagles return 10 starters from last year's roster and were picked to finish seventh in the Big South.

Molly Snead's (Cincinnati, Ohio) goal in the 61st minute gave the Thundering Herd a 1-0 victory against Winthrop last season in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. MU outshot the Eagles 18-4 on the night.

Marshall will conclude the weekend on Sunday afternoon against Liberty. This will be the first matchup between the two schools since 1999, when the Herd defeated the Flames 1-0.

Liberty enters the weekend at 0-1-1 losing its season-opener 4-0, to Virginia on Aug. 20 and tying South Carolina State 1-1, on Aug. 22. Aimee Luurtsema tallied the Flames only goal on the season, while goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt has compiled 16 saves.
