HUNTINGTON, W.VA. - The Marshall volleyball program will be away for both matches this weekend as the Herd take on Tulane and Southern Miss. The Tulane match is scheduled for tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. and the Southern Miss match is on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Both Tulane and Southern Miss trail Marshall by one match in Conference USA standings. Tulane is currently 6-11 and 1-5(C-USA) and Southern Miss is 7-11 and 1-5 in C-USA play.
Scouting Tulane: The Green Wave picked up their first Conference USA win of the season last weekend in Dallas, defeating SMU on Saturday before falling to the Mustangs on Sunday.
Tulane's, Cori Martone, paces the team on offense with 152 kills, but Izabela Grot holds a slim advantage in the kill department in Conference USA matches. Grot has totaled 60 kills in six C-USA matches, while Martone has accounted for 52 successful attacks. Grot ranks second on the team with 133 kills for the season and is one of five TU players to accumulate 100-plus kills so far in 2011.
Scouting Southern Miss: Southern Miss' lone conference win came against Memphis. After beating the Tigers, the Golden Eagles followed with a three match losing stint after taking two losses to Tulsa this past weekend and losing to UAB the weekend before.
The Golden Eagles are led by Halie Ecker in kills with 185, while four other Southern Miss players claim plus-100 kill counts as well. Southern Miss senior setter Kelsea Seymour is close to reaching the 4,000-assist milestone in her career. She now needs 32 to become only the second player in USM history to reach that plateau. She currently has 3,968. Last weekend, she joined the 1,000-dig club after tallying four digs against Memphis on Sept. 30. She became the 15th Golden Eagles to record over 1,000 digs in a career.
A Look at the Herd: Marshall is led in kills by outside hitter, Abby Tomas. The junior accounts for 166 finishes and has a team-best 2.96 kills per set ratio. Cameron Yoho follows closely in the category from her middle-blocker position with 163 kills. Yoho leads the team in service aces with 13.
Thundering Herd setter, Sammie Bane, put up two double-doubles in this past weekend's matches against Rice. During Saturday's match, the freshman combined for 45 assists and 11 digs and on Sunday she finished with 26 assists and 11 digs. Overall on the year, Bane tallies 517 assists and has the second-best service aces mark with 10.
Defensively, Ryanne Milligan has recorded 184 digs at the libero spot and Dorothy Rahal enters the weekend with 132 digs. At the net, Desirre Wilkerson has 49 blocks (10 solo, 39 assists) and Sacha Byous-McConnell follows closely with 43 (11 solo, 32 assists).
