Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky scored five times in the first, four of which were unearned due to two Marshall miscues as the Thundering Herd baseball team lost to the Colonels, 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field.

Marshall (10-17) scored the first run of the ball game, when Victor Gomez knocked in Victor Ramos with a single in the top of the first stanza.

In the bottom half of the inning, EKU (9-20) responded, putting a five-spot on the scoreboard off MU starter Ryan Butler (0-1). To Butler's defense, four of the runs scored were unearned as the righty was saddled with the loss.

The scoring cycle continued in the top half of the second with the Herd putting up two runs thanks to a Ramos RBI double and sac fly from centerfielder Isaac Ballou, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

After another sac fly from Ballou in the fifth put MU within a run of the home squad, the Colonels bounced back for two more in the last of the frame. They would tack on single runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Herd made things interesting in the ninth by loading the bases with one out thanks to back-to-back hit by pitches and a walk issued by Paul Duncan. Reliever Matt Harris gave up a RBI single from V.Gomez and a sac fly to Rhett Stafford, but recorded a strikeout to end the game and secure the victory for his first save.

Greg Terry (2-0) earned the victory out of the EKU bullpen, tossing four innings of relief without giving up an earned run.

For the MU offense, Ramos finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Ballou touched home twice and knocked in a pair. V.Gomez chipped in with two hits and two RBI in the loss.

Jesse Fernandez produced a strong two inning relief stint, giving up just one hit while recording three strikeouts.
