Rhett Stafford Picked in 22nd Round by Oakland Athletics

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Redshirt-junior Rhett Stafford of the Marshall University baseball team was selected in the 22nd round by the Oakland Athletics on the second day of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Tuesday evening.
Stafford produced a stellar third full-season with the Thundering Herd, topping the squad in homers (10), RBI (41), total bases (98) and slugging percentage (.560), while hitting at a career-best .320 clip. The Cheraw, S.C. native provides the Athletics with some versatility, as Stafford saw time in both the outfield and behind the dish at catcher.
Stafford, who was not drafted out of high school, was recruited and signed by head coach Jeff Waggoner as a catcher and moved to the outfield due to his athleticism. The A's used the 676th overall pick to select Stafford.
