Huntington, W.Va. - The men's golf team opened its 2011-12 season Monday by hosting day one of the 42nd Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf and Country Club. Players, coaches, and onlookers experienced exceptional weather conditions while taking in the first day's play. The 15 team, 54-hole tournament was set so that each player totaled 36 holes Monday, followed by the remaining 18 holes Tuesday. The Herd sit in tenth place after one day with a 36 hole total of 571.
Marshall tallied a seven-over-par 291 in round one Monday, which proved to be enough for a tenth place tie. The Herd was led throughout the initial eighteen by Nathan Kerns (Ironton, Ohio/Ironton HS) and Bosten Miller (Charleston, W.Va.) who each posted a one-under par, 70. Brian Anania (Hurricane, W.Va./ Hurricane HS) and Tas Sipowski (Jupiter, Fla.) contributed to the first round's total with a 74 and 77, respectively.
The Herd dropped 11 strokes in the second 18, shooting a team total of 280. Miller and Anania each came into the clubhouse after the afternoon round with an under par finish. Bosten Miller's 66 and Brian Anania's 68 collaborated with Kerns and Sipowski, who each tallied a two-over-par 73 on the final 18. Miller's 36-hole total puts him tied for fourth among all competitors.
Richmond's Daniel Walker holds the individual lead after the first day, posting two five-under-par rounds of 66 to put him at a score of ten-under-par 132. Walker holds a three stroke lead over Northwestern's Eric Chun and Kentucky's Cody Martin.
Virginia Commonwealth University left day one with the slim team advantage. The Rams delivered a first day total of 55, after posting a 277 and 278 in the first two rounds. Breathing down their throat is Northwestern University at 557 and several teams at 560.
Bosten Miller and the Marshall squad will look to make up strokes against the opposing teams on the final 18 held at Guyan Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
