HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall swimming and diving kicked off its season Friday with the second annual West Virginia State Games inside Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Huntington.
The Thundering Herd finds itself in second, behind the defending champion West Virginia. The Mountaineers hold a 292-244 edge over the Herd. Wheeling Jesuit is third with 173 points on the women's side with Fairmont State, Davis and Elkins and West Virginia Tech trailing behind.
Marshall's relay teams were the leaders in the pool Friday. Two teams in both the 200 yard freestyle relay and 400 yard medley relay racked up 122 points.
The Herd pulled in third and fourth place finishes in the 200 free relay with times of 1:41.73 and 1:43.55. While in the 400 medley relay, Marshall touched the wall in third (4:02.88) and fifth (4:17.00) place.
Madison Lawhorn was on both third place relay teams and individually she posted a third place finish in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.64. The Baltimore, Ohio native tailed 15 points with her time of 25.39 in the 50 free for a seventh place finish.
Other notable performances in the pool on Friday were Kacey Preun, posting a time of 5:04.56 in the 500 yard free for a third place finish and 16 points. Sarah Coghlin collected 15 points with a seventh place finish and a time of 5:11.15 in the 500 free.
Sarah Kay also reeled in 15 points as the junior touched the wall at 2:13.94 for a fifth place finish.
In diving, Lauren Rone was third in the three-meter springboard with a score of 247.65.
