HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Eastern Kentucky scored in six different innings and defeated the Marshall baseball team 12-4 Wednesday afternoon here at the Kennedy Center.
Three different members of the Thundering Herd (14-26) had multiple hits, but EKU (19-19) matched it with three three-hit performances as the visiting Colonels beat Marshall in game two of the season series. The two teams will meet once more in Huntington in May.
Marshall left-hander Wayland Moore (1-3) conceded three runs in the first and one more in the third to take the loss. The junior southpaw threw three innings and allowed four runs - three earned - on seven hits and no walks while striking out one.
The Herd pen got to work beyond the third as eight different relievers saw action in the loss. Freshman Kolin Stanley earned individual success with a perfect inning in the seventh when he took Marshall out of an inherited bases loaded, no out jam with only one run coming across the board. He did it on only four pitches.
Marshall's offense left a total of 10 runners on base throughout the game and failed to cash in several opportunities. In six separate innings, the Herd left a runner in scoring position, but Marshall was hurt most by failing to produce a run in a bases loaded situation with one out in the fourth. In all, MU went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position, with all three hits coming from freshmen and only one of which drove in a run.
Andrew Dundon went 2-for-4 in the game and drove in two of the Herd's four runs. After striking out in the second inning, the freshman responded with two quality at-bats in his next two plate appearances. Dundon singled in the fourth on an eight-pitch at-bat, then singled and drove in a run on a nine-pitch at-bat two innings later. His second RBI of the game came on a groundout to second in the eighth.
Alfredo Brito and Sergio Leon were both 2-for-5.
The lead-off spot in Eastern Kentucky's lineup hit for the cycle as Richie Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with a single, double, and triple, and Matt Phipps launched a home run to left in the ninth. Phipps came into the game in the eighth inning.
Outfielders Jacob Daniel and Michael Garcia were both 3-for-5 and combined for five RBIs and two runs scored.
EKU starter Nick Bozman (1-0) grabbed the win despite pitching only the first inning. The Colonels shuffled through eight arms in the victory.
