ONA, W.Va. -- Despite a dominating first half, the Thundering Herd women's soccer team fell to Colorado College 2-1 Friday night at Cabell Midland High School.
Marshall lost at home for the first time this season and fell to 4-5-0 (0-1-0 C-USA). Colorado College won its fifth straight and improved to 6-1-3 (1-0-0 C-USA).
Senior forward Chelsey Maiden gave the Herd the early lead when she scored her third goal of the season in just the fifth minute of action. Freshman Erin Simmons created the opportunity for Maiden with a beautiful pass over the top of the Tiger defense, leaving Maiden to score from close range.
Marshall continued to create chances throughout the rest of the first half but failed to capitalize on crucial breakaways and other advantageous situations.
In the second half, Colorado College's Jessie Ayers tied the game at 1-1 in the 64th minute after a pass from junior forward Lynn Froetscher found the sophomore open at the top of the penalty area.
Ayers would break the tie less than 16 minutes later (80') on a similar play. Senior Brittney Lyman was credited with the assist on the match-winning goal.
Marshall took 11 shots in the game, only two of which came in the second half. Colorado College matched the Herd with nine first half shots but took seven more after the intermission.
Senior goalkeeper Lindsey Kerns made six saves, while Scheele needed to make four.
Marshall will return to the pitch Sunday for its second C-USA matchup when it hosts UTEP at 1 p.m. at Hurricane High School in Hurricane, W.Va.
