Herd Advances 10 to Finals at Day 1 of Zippy Invite

Ten Marshall Thundering Herd swimmers advanced to the evening scoring session scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron.
Junior Kaley Gregory (Hurricane, W.Va.) led the way in the 500 freestyle and was also Marshall's highest finish in the morning qualifying session. Gregory was second with a season best 5:00.23. Junior Kacey Preun (St. Andrews, Mantitoba, Canada) was right behind at fourth with a time of 5:01.65. Freshman Teel Hartmann (Louisville, Ky.) is the top seed in the Consolation Final at 5:03.86, a time just off her lifetime best. Freshman Bree Mury (Round Rock, Texas) qualified 15th with a lifetime best of 5:09.26 and Senior Tiffany Aeling (Columbus, Ohio) was 16th with a season best 5:10.24.
In the 200 individual medley, senior Vera Niemeyer (Wuerselen, Germany) qualified fourth for the Championship Final with a time of 2:07.20. Senior Sarah Kay (Cape Town, South Africa) was 16th in 2:10.27. Senior Madison Lawhorn (Baltimore, Ohio) and senior Heather Moore (Roswell, Ga.) will compete tonight in the Bonus Final, qualifying with times of 2:10.36 and 2:10.92 respectively. All four performances were season bests.
Freshman Chloe Parsemain (For sur Mer, France) is the lone swimmer from the Herd to advance in the 50 freestyle. Parsemain qualified tied for 18th in a season best 24.69.
"We set the tone this morning with our 500's," coach Bill Tramel said. "In the end, we had 10 of our 12 swimmers advance to finals tonight. Everyone swam a season best this morning, 100 percent. That is our goal for this weekend. We had a great start this morning, now we need to come to play tonight for points."
Diving preliminaries are being contested this afternoon. Finals begin at 6 p.m.
"It's fun when you swim fast," Tramel concluded. "I expect we will be smiling all through the weekend."
