HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- For the second time in the last three weeks, Marshall's Aaron Blair has been named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, for the week ending April 7.
In a series-clinching win over No. 19 Houston, Blair struck out 11 and walked one in an eight-inning two-hitter. Blair was given a run in the bottom of the second but battled against the recently red-hot Cougars with never more than the one-run lead.
The right-hander's 11 punchouts included five which he struck out looking.
For the afternoon, Blair allowed only four base runners, and only once did Houston put more than one man on in a single inning.
Five of the eight frames Blair pitched went 1-2-3 for the Cougars, and the Las Vegas, Nev. native retired as many as 14 in a row in the victory.
The Cougars batted 2-for-26 (.077) overall against Blair and 0-for-6 when they had runners on base.
Season-wise, it was Blair's fifth straight quality start, during which time he has been a part of three shutouts while striking out an average of 7.4 hitters per outing (10.09 K/9). Blair improved to 5-1.
Over his last four starts, Blair is 4-0 with an ERA of 0.33.
