Jules Leads Heptathlon after Day 1

HOUSTON - Senior Vanessa Jules placed first in three of four heptathlon events Thursday in the first day of the Conference USA Track and Field Championships from Houston, Texas.
Jules accumulated 3,534 points in the seven-event competition. She holds a healthy lead over nearest competitors Xenia Rahn of Memphis (3,240) and Jallycia Pearson of UTEP (3,118).
Jules won the 100 meter hurdles (13.82), the high jump (5-11.25/1.81m) and the 200 meters with a school record time of 24.37. That time broke the old record of 24.43 set by Zedmalia Wolfe in 2004.
Jules then finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 10.98m (36-00.25).
Freshman Shanice Johnson is in 14th place, but had success in the 200 meters with a second place time of 24.56. She finished 13th in the 100 meter hurdles (15.17), 12th in the high jump (1.48m/4-10.25) and 14th in the shot put (8.13m).
The long jump, javelin and 800 meters are the remaining events in the heptathlon which begins on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Jules could be the first since Elaine Derricott (2011), also in the heptathlon, to win a C-USA outdoor individual title.
The first event of the day on Friday is the women's hammer throw.
