CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall tennis turned in a successful final day at the UVa Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., winning four of six matches, including winning the doubles flight championship.

The sophomore duo of Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) led the squad, after winning the Blue Flight championship with a defeat against the UVA duo of Marie Faure/Cassie Mercer 8-7 (4).

Rookie twosome Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) played in the consolation finals of the Blue Flight, falling 8-1 to the Northwestern pair Rooney/Leung.

In singles action, both Silver and Bogicevic tallied wins over conference foe Old Dominion. Silver defeated Vukovic 6-0, 6-1, and Bogicevic trumped Atiso 6-3, 7-6.

Turhan defeated Northwestern's Chatt 6-4, 6-1 in Orange Flight play. Pomyatinskaya battled Folland from South Carolina but succumbed 7-5, 6-3.

Marshall will return to the Commonwealth of Virginia once more, heading back to Blacksburg for the ITA Regionals on Oct. 17-19.

MERCER'S MUSINGS

Quotes by head coach John Mercer:

On the Turhan/Pomyatinskaya flight win:

"They won their flight, which is huge. Those are high ranked teams, and we won. We beat a pair from Virginia in the final, who is a team consistently in the top 10. They played great, and they play well together as a team. We see them get better every match, which is really encouraging. All three of their double match scores in the flight were the same score. In all my years of coaching, I've never seen that."

On the performances of Silver and Pomyatinskaya in singles:

"Maddie [Silver] had a great win. She really controlled that match. And Anna [Pomyatinskaya], continues to play really well. She just gets a little streaky in the end, where she plays great and then just loses it in the end. We have to get that consistency where she plays awesome the whole match, but it is really encouraging to see the way she is playing at this level."
