HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall baseball was treated to a special speaker on Thursday afternoon, as former Major League pitcher Zach McClellan spoke to the Herd pitching staff.
An alumnus of Indiana University, the relief pitcher spent the 2007 season with the Colorado Rockies. The righty spoke to the Herd about the importance of decision-making and constant hard work, both on and off the mound.
"Always control what you can control," McClellan said to the team. "There are a lot of factors that you can not control, but you can control if you go to class or not. You may not be able to control if you're talented or not in that math class, but you can control going."
"The same with baseball- you might be able to control where the umpire is or what he says or whether the guy hits the ball, but you can control where you throw that pitch."
"It's absolutely wonderful that Zach could come in and speak to our guys," Marshall pitching coach Josh Newman said. "He has an amazing message and it is such a benefit for our program to be able to hear guys like him speak and be able to motivate them."
Marshall will conclude its fall season with an exhibition game Sunday, Oct. 19, in Morgantown, W.Va. facing in-state foe West Virginia.
