Volleyball Set For Weekend Roadtrip

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--
Marshall volleyball (9-10) will continue Conference USA this weekend, first stopping in Bowling Green, Ky., for a matchup with league-leading newcomer Western Kentucky (17-4) on Friday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. ET, and then capping off its road trip with a Sunday showdown at 1 p.m. against Southern Miss (13-8) in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Marshall sits fourth in the conference with a 3-1 record, while WKU leads with a 5-0, and Southern Miss is 2-2.

HAVE YOU HERD?

Juniors Lauren Legge (Pliny, W.Va.) and Jillian Shemanski (Jupiter, Fla.) achieved season highs, recording 14 and 13 kills, respectively, in the Herd's first league loss last Sunday against North Texas. Legge is third on the squad with 152 kills, while Shemanski is fifth with 89.

Shemanski is third in C-USA with an average 1.12 blocks per set (second overall, 73 total blocks).

SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS

Western Kentucky, in its first C-USA season, has knocked off six straight opponents and also defeated No. 8 Purdue earlier in the season.

The Hilltoppers are led offensively by freshman Alyssa Cavanaugh, who has posted 209 kills, averaging 2.99 per set.

Senior Heather Boyan leads C-USA with 74 total blocks. The middle hitter also has 172 kills.

Thus far, Marshall and WKU have faced two common opponents in FIU and Charlotte. The Herd and Hilltoppers defeated both.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

Southern Miss is led by sophomore outside hitter Stephany Purdue, who boasts 233 kills, and also has 24 service aces. Junior Quinci Hayward closely follows with 224 kills.

The Golden Eagles' net game is controlled by senior Jasmine Crowell, who has 66 total blocks.

The Herd and Southern Miss have faced Middle Tennessee and Charlotte, with the Golden Eagles' losing 3-1 to Middle and defeating Charlotte by the same score.

WE MEET AGAIN

The last time the Herd and the Hilltoppers faced off was in 2010 St. Louis tournament, and Marshall won in five sets.

Marshall fell last season to Southern Miss 3-1. Then-freshman Ally Kiekover (Grand Rapids, Mich.) collected 12 kills and five total blocks in the match.

UP NEXT

Marshall returns home for a weekend of conference play, facing UAB and Charlotte at the Henderson Center, on Oct. 17 and 19, respectively.
