HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Ben Roeder (Midland, Mich.), the 2014 individual state champion of Michigan, has signed with Marshall men's golf, coach Matt Grobe announced on Thursday.

"I'm really excited about Ben," Grobe said. "What excites me the most is that he's an all-around good kid. He's a high-character kid and he has great parents. The team really liked him when he came here for his official visit. And he's really good in the classroom."

Last spring, Roeder captured one of two available qualifying spots in a five-man playoff to advance out of the Michigan D-I regional, and the following week he won another five-man, three-hole playoff to take the individual state championship after shooting a 141 over two rounds. The win marked the first boys' individual state golf title in Herbert Henry Dow High School history.

The 6-foot-2, right-handed golfer is looking forward to joining the Herd in Huntington.

"I could not be more excited about being part of the Thundering Herd," Roeder said. "At times it seems to be all I think about. All the guys on the team are great and I know Coach Grobe will help me reach all the goals I have for myself not only for golf in college but golf beyond college and life in general. I'm certain that I made the right decision in joining the Herd."

Grobe is eager to start working with Roeder in the fall.

"On top of his great character, he's a wonderful golfer," Grobe said. "He has a great short game. He worked hard on that his junior year and really improved tremendously. We think he's going to help us immediately [next year]. I think he'll start playing in the lineup right away."

Grobe and the Herd will pick-up spring 2015 competition at the Davidson Invitational in Davidson, N.C., on March 2.
