HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall is coming off its first opening C-USA series win since sweeping Memphis in 2009. The Herd took two games from East Carolina last weekend, but fell to border rival Morehead State on Tuesday, despite a 9th inning which saw Marshall score six runs and come within two of the Eagles.
Junior starting pitcher Matt Margaritonda (Freehold, N.J.) earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors after his career-best performance against ECU. The right-hander recorded a career high 11 strikeouts in his first complete game.
Margaritonda faced just two batters over the game minimum.
Freshman centerfielder and in-state native Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) will make a homecoming of sorts, after leading his high school, Herbert Hoover, to a state championship at Power Park last June. Bird is second on the squad in batting average (.289) and tied for first with three stolen bases.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Southern Miss makes its 2014 C-USA debut with the Herd. The Golden Eagles were 2013 regular season conference co-champions, but post an overall record of 7-10 this season after a Wednesday 5-1 loss to South Alabama.
Southern Miss brings powerful bats in junior Mason Robbins and sophomore Tim Lynch, who are hitting .271 and .254, respectively, in 17 games this season. Robbins has one homerun and seven doubles, and leads the team in RBI with 13.
The Golden Eagles post a collective ERA of 3.85. Closer Bradley Roney posts an ERA of 0.96 with five saves on the year.
