MIAMI-On the most beautiful day Marshall baseball has been given this season, the Herd took to the field to face No. 30 FIU for the second of a three-game matchup.
The Herd dropped to 3-5 in C-USA play and 6-14 overall after a 9-0 loss, suffering its second shutout of the season.
For five innings it was a pitchers' duel, as Herd starter Michael Taylor (St. Albans, W.Va.) worked very efficiently, earning three strikeouts and allowing just one walk.
Taylor ran into trouble in the 6th inning, after allowing a leadoff single out of Panther catcher Aramis Garcia, who came around to score on an RBI groundout. The next batter, Edwin Rios, launched a ball over the right field wall to plate two more FIU runs.
With a 3-0 lead, Marshall returned to defense in the 7th, and allowed six more runs to cross for the Panthers off of five hits and an error.
The Herd bats could not wake up at the right times, as Marshall left eight runners on base during the contest.
Catcher Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) and right fielder Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.) both posted doubles in the contest.
Marshall faces FIU Sunday at 11 a.m. for the finale of the inaugural series. Herd pitcher Matt Margaritonda (Freehold, N.J.) will take to the mound with a 2-0 record in conference play.
