HUNTINGTON, W. Va.-- Marshall baseball took the first of the four game series with WV Tech, defeating the Golden Bears in a 7-0 defeat Wednesday to move to 15-20 on the year.
Freshman Roscoe Blackburn (Worthington, Ohio) got the nod, making his fifth start of the year. The southpaw tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one hit and picking up three strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
"I wanted to just keep getting ahead of the count and attacking the batter," Blackburn said of his performance. "It was great to pick up my first win, but I'm more excited about how we played today as a whole."
The Herd attacked early in the second to gain the advantage, then scored four in the sixth and two in the eighth to cap its second shutout of the season.
In the bottom of the second, sophomore Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) singled up the middle, took two bases on a Tech error, and scored on a single from junior Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.).
In the sixth, a leadoff walk to junior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) turned into another run after junior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) belted his second triple of the year to score Dundon.
The Herd then plated three more runs, as Diffenderfer scored on a Tech error, and Bossi and sophomore designated hitter Chase Vogelbach (Ft. Myers, Fla.) scored on a double to right center by freshman Brenden Wells (Beloit, Ohio).
Marshall built on to its lead in the eighth, when junior Sergio Leon (Miami) singled up the middle to score Escobedo and Wells.
Relievers Clint Wilson (Cedar Park, Texas) and Brandyn Sittinger (LaGrange, Ohio) each fanned two in one inning of work apiece.
Marshall returns to action Thursday for game two of the four-game series, which is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
