Herd Hosts Two in Midweek Meetings

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall baseball prepares for its first full midweek at home as the Herd hosts Eastern Kentucky Tuesday, March 8, at 3:00 p.m. and border rival Ohio Wednesday, April 9, also at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at the Kennedy Center Field along Route 2.

The Herd faced EKU less than a week ago, falling 4-1.

Marshall and Ohio were scheduled to play earlier this season, but weather forced a cancellation. The Herd defeated the Bobcats last season 4-2.

Marshall is now .500 in Conference USA play at 7-7, and supports an 11-18 overall record.

Marshall is coming off taking its third conference series of the season, after defeating Florida Atlantic two games to one.

The Herd earned its first shutout of 2014 on Friday, beating the Owls 5-0.

Junior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) belted a double and triple (another first for the Herd this season) and scored two runs while redshirt sophomore Robert Fajardo (Miami) went 2-2, also with a double and two runs.

Saturday saw Marshall rally from behind after being down 2-0 to take the game and series 7-3.

Fajardo had another double in a 2-4, three RBI, one run performance.

Sophomore Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) also provided on the Herd offense, going 3-4 with two runs and a RBI. Bossi went 5-8 in the two games he played.

Marshall fell to FAU 17-3 on Sunday in the finale of the series.

SCOUTING THE COLONELS

Eastern Kentucky enters Tuesday with a 14-17, coming off a two loss weekend to Morehead State.

Designated hitter Bryan Soloman went 2-4 against the Herd last week, while third baseman Doug Teegarden and shortstop Kenny Hostrander each turned in 2-3 performances with a run.

Soloman is currently hitting .308, second on the team behind sophomore Kyle Nowlin, who leads with .318.

Hostrander and Teegarden turn in batting averages of .242 and .233, respectively.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS

Ohio brings a 5-23 (1-8 MAC) record to Huntington, coming off being swept by Kent State over the weekend.

The Bobcats are led by freshman Mitch Longo, who leads the team in batting average, doubles, triples, homeruns, RBI, and stolen bases (.415, 7, 2, 2, 16, 5).

Assisting Longo offensively is junior Tyler Wells, who supports a .300 batting average with five RBI.

The Bobcats post a 6.64 ERA collectively as a staff.
