CHARLESTON, Ill. - One game after her older sister's two-goal performance against VCU (Aug. 24), junior Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) scored twice in Marshall women's soccer's (1-1-1) first victory of 2014: a 3-0 shutout of Eastern Illinois (0-3-0), Friday, at Lakeside Field.
Culicerto got the scoring started for the Herd in the 25th minute when fellow junior Lia Foster (Keswick, Ontario) set up a free kick which Culicerto headed home. Marshall went into the break with a 1-0 lead and topped the shot chart, 7-1.
Ten minutes into the second half, Culicerto struck a free kick into the net from the top of the penalty box for her second goal of the match and the sixth of her career. In the 67th minute, sophomore Sydney Arnold (Stafford, Va.) and junior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) broke away from the field into a 2-on-1 situation. Simmons found Arnold who beat EIU's keeper to the lower left corner of the net to put the Herd up, 3-0.
Marshall's defense held strong for the final 23 minutes, giving redshirt junior goalkeeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) her first shutout of 2014.
AGAINST THE PANTHERS
Marshall led all offensive parts of the score sheet: shots (21-4), shots on goal (11-2) and corner kicks (10-1). Kish made two saves in her first 2014 shutout while Emily Hinton made eight saves and took three goals against.
Simmons took a career-high seven shots with two on-goal, while Culicerto and Arnold followed with four and three shots each, respectively.
Kish's shutout is the 10th of her career, moving her into sole possession of second place all-time in the Herd record book.
THUNDER(ING HERD) STRIKES TWICE
For the second time this season, a Culicerto has scored twice in a single game for the Herd. Senior Kristine Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) netted two for the second time in her career in Marshall's 3-3 tie against VCU (Aug. 24). Last season, she scored two goals against Kent State (Aug. 25).
