HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall baseball wraps up its fall schedule this weekend as it travels north to in-state rival West Virginia for a two game series.
The series will start on Friday evening at 7 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at Noon. Both games will be held at Monongalia County Ballpark in Granville, W.Va.
Last season the two teams met in Charleston, W.Va, where the Herd walked away with a 3-2 victory over WVU. A three-run second inning propelled the Herd to claim the one run victory. Then junior Caleb Ross tossed a hitless 1.2 innings on 11 pitches. Leading at the plate for Marshall was Robert Fajardo with one hit and one RBI.
The 2015-16 Herd features nine field players that appeared in more than 10 games last season. Among the nine returners to the field is junior Corey Bird and senior Aaron Bossi, as they recorded a batting average over .300, while Bird had a team high 65 hits and Bossi had 15 RBIs on 34 hits.
Returning to the mound are five pitchers from 2015 that recorded 15 innings, including Chase Boster, who led the team with a 7-1 record in 12 appearances with a 2.95 ERA. JD Hammer returns as the leading strikeout pitcher for Marshall with 56 from last season.
Leading the Herd in his 10thyear is head coach Jeff Waggoner. Waggoner has mentored 29 Marshall student-athletes to be selected in the MLB Amateur Draft, including 18 since 2008. Waggoner is assisted by Tim Donnelly, Josh Newman, Brian Karletand Heath Storey.
