Doc Holliday, head coach
Opening Statement:
"The important thing is we won that football game. Defensively, we played tremendous and did some really good things on special teams. Offensively, we grew up a bit in the second half and did some good things. The important thing is we're 1-0 in the league. We have a great challenge here again Friday night, where we've got the opportunity to showcase our program just like the Purdue game, being the only game on television nationally."
On quarterback Chase Litton:
"I thought in the second half he came out and looked more under control and made some nice throws and did some good things. The important thing is he's 3-0 as a starter."
On defense wanting the shutout:
"If you leave a guy like Corey Tindal, Jarquez Samuel and D.J. Hunter in there on one of those series and one of them gets hurt and we lose them for next week, that's not smart. So, we get some young kids in there; number one to get them playing a little bit and number two to try and protect some of those other guys, because it's a long season."
On Ryan Bee:
"Somebody told me at the end of the game that he was the MVP and I said I'd never heard of a backup defensive end being the MVP of the game, but I guess there's a first for everything. He's a tremendous young player that's very athletic for a 6-7 guy."
On the short week for next game:
"We have our schedule that we follow and the only thing is we normally have Monday off, but we won't this week because of the game on Friday. We just have to get these guys back and the new training center we have over there is helping out a lot. We'll get those guys in those pools tomorrow and our guys will have to do a great job of taking care of themselves and getting ready."
"The good thing is we're home. I think when you're home and have a short week that it helps you. So, we have to take advantage of it and go get better."
On performance of Evan McKelvey:
"He was one of our captains and every Friday night our captains are the ones who address our team at the dinner. He was unbelievable, maybe one of the best talks I've heard from somebody. I didn't know he could talk like that. It was just tremendous. The message he sent to our team last night was unbelievable. He's not just a big time player, but he's becoming a big time leader on our football team. The adversity he's overcome, when great things happen for kids who overcome adversity not once, but twice like he has, I'm just proud of him and it's really nice that great things are happening for him."
Deandre Reaves, redshirt senior wide receiver
On the weather:
"We practiced all week in it so we kind of got used to it come game day."
On experience with short weeks:
"It's just going to be like any other day and week. We are going to attack the game Friday like we would on a Saturday. It's just one less day, not too much is going to change really."
Corey Tindal, redshirt junior defensive back
On the younger players getting experience:
"We have to let the young guys get experience every change they can because we're not going to have our starters every game. We have the young guys in to get better."
On the importance of playing good defense with weather being a factor:
"It's a defensive day, it was raining, we had to play great and I'm pretty sure we proved that today. We were preaching all day, 'we have to start fast, can't start off slow.'"
Shawn Petty, redshirt junior linebacker
On forcing the punt and putting team in good field position:
"It's a confidence booster when you get out there on your first play back and make a play. It felt good because our whole defense was connecting today."
On wanting the shutout:
"We wanted it bad. It hurt me when I missed the tackle for the touchdown but we just have to prepare better for next time."
On the mindset during a short week:
"[Coach] Doc [Holliday] already said it, no days off. We're going to prepare like we did for Saturday but just in a shorter time."
On missing practice and game time:
"I've been ready. It's been a long time and I've just been ready to get back out there. I didn't want to go out there and be too anxious though, but I went out there and was ready to do my job."
Ryan Bee, redshirt freshman defensive lineman
On contributing to the game:
"It's a great feeling, coming to work every day and seeing it pay off out there is the biggest reward."
On waiting for "his turn":
"When your time comes you just have to step up to the plate and make a play and that's just what I was trying to do out there."
On height and athleticism:
"When you see a big guy like me, most people think I would be slow and I'm just doing what I can out there."
On his two sacks:
"It was a great feeling and when Gary Thompson got that first sack we all went wild."
Chase Litton, freshman quarterback
On throwing some rockets into some really tight situations:
"We just had to take advantage of what their defense was showing us and capitalize on it."
On throwing from last week to this week
"I felt real confident. ODU doesn't blitz the same as Kent State. So that kept us on our feet. We knew it would be a wet game so we just had to work with it."
Evan McKelvey, redshirt senior linebacker
On the impact of good defense:
"Conditions wise, I could care less if it's hot, cold, snowy. Regardless we're going to play defense, I love when it's raining because it's easier to get the ball out and help the defensive a little bit more."
On fumbles:
"I actually smiled when we fumbled the ball, I mean it's obviously not a good thing but I love being on the field, I love being on defense. Anytime we get to be on the field I love getting that chance to play."
On his Friday night speech pep talk:
"I rehearsed it about 50 times and had a paper I was going to use but I could never get passed the first two sentences. So I ended up so speaking straight from my heart."
Tony Pittman, redshirt sophomore running back
On getting in the endzone:
"It's more about the team but it felt great though."
On his individual performance and stepping in for Devon Johnson:
"Very big shoes to fill but I was just taking advantage of the opportunity and I didn't want to let those guys down. Devon and Remi [Watson] actually help us out a lot on the sidelines, coaching us and given us great advice."
OLD DOMINION
Bobby Wilder, head coach
On the Monarchs' performance:
"Our team showed a lot of character today in the way they performed. We just continued to struggle offensively, particularly in the first half. We'll bounce back from this, because that locker room was disappointed with the loss, but I've seen things today that I've never seen."
On sophomore running back Ray Lawry:
"It was critical to get the run game going, and we've been doing that without throwing for yards in the pass game. Ray played physical, he felt awful about that one fumble he had. Ray Lawry doesn't fumble, that's not something we see out of Ray. So we're just having some really untimely plays right now and they get compounded when you play teams like NC State, Appalachian State, and a very good Marshall team like we were playing today."
Shuler Bentley, freshman quarterback
On the team's performance:
"We just have to keep working. We're right there and we were driving pretty good in the fourth quarter, we just have to do it in the first. I don't know what it is, but it's going to click, and when it does it's going to feel a whole lot better."
On comparing this loss to the Appalachian State loss:
"Any time you get beat it's rough. Nobody likes losing, if it was up to me we'd come out here and win every game, but that's just not the way it goes."
Ray Lawry, sophomore running back
On positives after the loss:
"We know that we still have the ability to move the ball and we showed that throughout the game. Obviously there is some stuff we need to improve on and we'll just keep improving."
On ODU's offensive struggles:
"They just played a great job on defense. I think our offensive line played a lot better than they did before but we're just struggling right now. We're in a slump. We just got to keep working and improving."
On his 160-yard performance:
"It's a loss so it doesn't really matter. I got to get better too and prepare for Charlotte next so I'll keep working."
Martez Simpson, senior linebacker
On ODU's defensive performance:
"We came out and played physical. We had the right mindset when we came out here. We just tried to limit all the bad mistakes on our part."
On ODU's offensive struggles:
"It's tough, but we have the offenses back like they have our back. So we just keep motivating them and they keep motivating us."
On the team's morale moving forward:
"We're hurt, but we're still together as a team. We're still helping each other."
