BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Marshall football fell on Friday afternoon at WKU in the final regular season game of the season, 49-28.
Marshall moves to 9-3 (6-2 C-USA), while WKU improves to 10-2 (8-0 C-USA).
After WKU put itself up by seven within the first 44 seconds of the contest, Marshall's defense kept the game in reach. The Herd defense and special teams forced two turnovers, including a fumble forced by Antavis Rowe on a punt that was recovered by the long snapper Matt Cincotta. The other turnover halted a WKU run, as Doughty threw the ball behind him to his receiver and Taj Letman landed on the loose ball.
Marshall found itself on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter, as Deandre Reaves returned a kickoff for 97-yards to put the Herd down by two scores. The kick return was Reaves second kick return for a touchdown this season. He is the first Herd player with multiple kick return touchdowns in one season since Troy Brown in 1991. Marshall was able to add one more score before the end of the half. Chase Litton found Ryan Yurachek in the corner of the endzone for a five-yard touchdown reception. Despite the two touchdowns in the quarter, WKU led at the half, 35-14.
In the third quarter, Marshall's defense stood tall as it forced WKU to settle for two field goals. The Herd's offense responded to the strong defensive play by scoring a touchdown before the end of the quarter, as Litton hit Justin Hunt for a 32-yard touchdown on fourth down.
The Herd and Hilltoppers closed out the final quarter of play by trading touchdowns. After WKU scored with 12:07 remaining, Marshall added its first rushing touchdown of the game with a four-yard run from Hyleck Foster.
