HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall track and field team opened its regular-season with a strong win at the Marshall Opener against Ohio and Radford at the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Facility.
Marshall topped Ohio 65-48 and beat Radford 71-37. Ohio beat Radford 71-35.
In the 600 meter run, freshman Elisabeth Paulina broke the school, meet and facility record in her first meet, with a time of 1:32.80.
The Herd also swept the top three spots in the 300 meter dash. Senior Shanice Johnson broke her own school record and also set a meet and facility record with a time of 40.52. Senior Shyra Molton (41.67) and junior Kametra Byrd (44.46) finished second and third.
Marshall runners also took care of business in the 60 meter competitions, winning both the dash and hurdles. Hope Julmiste won the 60 meter dash (7.67 seconds), while Asia Bange won the 60 meter hurdles (8.81).
In the last run of the night, the team of Paulina, Breanna Hargrove, Andrea Chidester and Naja Greer also won the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:58.86.
The Herd's jumpers and throwers also featured several winners. Karena Fulks won the long jump (5.46 meters). Freshman Allie Perry won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.35 meters, also setting the school record. Also, Lauren George won the triple jump with a jump of 11.11 meters.
Freshman Elena Marchand (13.20 meters) won the shot put for the Marshall throwers.
"I thought it went really well, for the first meet of the year," Marshall coach Jeff Small said. "We broke three school records today, which is awesome. I was proud of the girls. Really, I think I was overall very pleased with everyone. For a first time out, it was great."
Marshall returns to action on Jan. 15, 2016, at the two-day Kentucky Indoor Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
