Marshall Baseball Prepares for Midweek Contests

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -
Marshall baseball (6-11) will begin midweek play, traveling to Richmond, Ky., on Tuesday, March 17, to face Eastern Kentucky (5-11), before its home opener against Morehead State (10-6) on Wednesday, March 18 at the Kennedy Center field in Huntington.



The Herd and the Colonels are scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch, while Marshall and Morehead are slated to begin at 3 p.m.



Marshall split the series with EKU last season, falling 4-1 in Richmond but taking a 7-3 victory in Huntington, and lost to Morehead 11-9 in its only match up.

HAVE YOU HERD?



Marshall opened conference play last weekend, suffering its first sweep of the season after dropping all three contests to UTSA. It was the first weekend of the season that the Herd did not record at least one home run.



Senior Sergio Leon (Miami) continues to lead the squad offensively, posting a team-best .373 batting average and six stolen bases. Leon is sixth in C-USA in average and third in stolen bases.



SCOUTING THE COLONELS



Eastern Kentucky comes into the week with a four-game losing streak, most recently dropping a doubleheader to league-foe Belmont over the weekend. The EKU bats are led by junior TJ Alas, who boasts a .426 average with six doubles and five home runs. Righty Chris Cervantes will get the start against the Herd, who has one start in five appearances and a 7.00 ERA with nine strikeouts.



SCOUTING THE EAGLES



Morehead State opened Ohio Valley Conference play this past weekend, dropping two of three games to Southeast Missouri. The Eagles will face East Tennessee State before heading to Huntington on Wednesday. Senior outfielder Nick Newell carries a team-best .361 batting average and senior infielder Kane Sweeney follows closely behind at .344.

Marshall will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to face UAB in a three game series beginning Friday, March 20. The Herd and Blazers' Sunday contest will be televised on American Sports Network and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (ET).
