OXFORD, Ohio -- Marshall baseball (9-18) raked in 23 hits in a demanding 16-3 win over Miami (OH) (4-20) Wednesday evening in Oxford, Ohio, at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
Every Herd player in the lineup recorded a hit except one. Sophomore Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) collected four hits and scored three times, including slicing a triple way into right field. Seniors Josh King (Troup, Ga.) and Sergio Leon (Miami) turned in three hits apiece, with King falling just a triple shy of the cycle with three RBI. Leon hit both a double and triple with four RBI.
Marshall attacked quickly, plating three runs in the first inning. Bird led off with a walk, and came around to score on a single from junior DJ Gee (Seattle). Gee then scored after a single from King, and senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) then scored on a infield single from sophomore Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.)
The Herd then added to its lead in the fourth, coming home six more times. Senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) led off the inning with a double, and after Herd catcher Matt Reed (Purcellville, Va.) boarded on a hit-by-pitch and Bird singled to load the bases, Leon smacked his triple to bring all of them home. Gee then singled Leon home, and then another triple, this time courtesy of junior Ryne Dean (Fresno, Calif.), brought Diffenderfer and Gee home.
The Redhawks got two runs across in the fourth to avoid the shutout, courtesy of three straight hits, and then plated another in the fifth.
Dean led off the sixth inning with a walk, and then King blasted his third homer of the season for more insurance for the Herd.
In the eighth, doubles from Leon and Diffenderfer and singles from Dean and freshman Austin Norman (Fairmont, W. Va.) brought four more runs across, and another run in the ninth solidified the 16-3 victory.
Relievers Clint Wilson (Austin, Texas), Sam Hunter (Ashland, Ky.) and Nick Newton (Columbus, Ohio) each tossed a scoreless inning, striking out two.

Chase Boster, Jr., Starting Pitcher
"It was a great team win. The offense did all of the talking, and I just tried to keep up. Coming into the game with a 3-0 lead really gives any pitcher a lot of confidence."
Corey Bird, So., Center Fielder
"It was a great team game. Pitchers attacked hitters and stayed low in the zone, and us hitters were aggressive and we executed and just stayed focused for all nine innings."
