BECKLEY, W.Va. --
Despite a ninth-inning rally, Marshall baseball (10-23, 3-11 C-USA) fell to Conference USA opponent Charlotte (13-15, 7-10 C-USA) Saturday afternoon at Epling Stadium in Beckley, W.Va.

Senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) recorded three hits with an RBI and a run, and junior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) cracked another two hits in a 2-for-5 day with a run. Bossi almost played the hero for the second day in a row, as he raked a two-out, two-on ball to deep right that would have almost given the Herd the walk-off win.

Junior Robert Fajardo (Miami) and sophomore Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) also collected two hits apiece in the loss.

Charlotte tacked on two early runs in the second inning and then another in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Herd plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the 49ers plated another two in the eighth to add insurance.

In the bottom of the eighth, back-to-back singles from Diffenderfer and Bossi put two men on for the Herd. Senior Josh King (Troup, Ga.) then ripped a ball up the middle to score Diffenderfer, and Bossi plated the second MU run of the inning on a passed ball.

Down 5-4 in the ninth, the Herd threatened after a Bird single through the left side and then moved to third after a single from DJ Gee (Seattle). Another single from Diffenderfer brought Bird home, and put two men on for Bossi.

The rubber match is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Epling Stadium.
