Marshall baseball (11-24) suffered its second shutout of the season, falling 7-0 to the Zips of Akron (17-16) on Tuesday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.

The Herd scattered seven hits in the loss. Freshman Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.) hit a double, and sophomore Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) swiped his sixth stolen base of the season. Ă‚ Reliever Clint Wilson (Austin, Texas) collected three strikeouts in 1.1 scoreless innings, fanning three of the four batters he faced.

Akron took the lead after plating two runs in the second inning, and then added a run in each the third, fourth, and sixth innings. The Zips came home twice in the eighth inning to add insurance.

The Herd presented a threat in the ninth inning, when senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) and pinch-hitter Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.) collected back-to-back singles.

Marshall will next face Conference USA foe Old Dominion in a three-game series at Bud Matheny Baseball Complex in Norfolk, Va., beginning Friday, April 17.
