Marshall Begins Midweek Series with Mountaineers

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- A rivalry will be renewed this week as Marshall baseball (13-25, 6-12) will make the trek north to Morgantown to play in-state foe West Virginia (22-15, 5-7 Big 12) in the first of a two-game midweek series beginning Tuesday.
The two teams will play in brand new Monongalia County Ballpark, home of the new short-season West Virginia Black Bears of the New York-Penn League.
First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
The two teams played to an 8-8, 10-inning tie during an exhibition game last fall. The Herd was propelled by a two-hit, three RBI performance from senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.).
The Herd and WVU will meet again next Tuesday (April 28) at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va., also at 6 p.m.

HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall won its second consecutive Conference USA series over the weekend, defeating 2014 NCAA Regional qualifier Old Dominion in two of three games. Starting pitchers Chase Boster (Stafford, Va.) and JD Hammer (Fort Collins, Colo.) each tossed career-long outings and both picked up victories.
Tuesday's starting pitcher, Josh King (Troup, Ga.), is no stranger to the Mountaineer lineup. In 2013, King and former classmate Aaron Blair (now in Class AA with the Arizona Diamondbacks' system) combined for a two-hit shutout against WVU in an 8-0 Herd victory at Power Park. The start will be the first for King of 2015, after converting to a utility player this season following Tommy John surgery.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
WVU enters the week off a series loss to No. 23 Oklahoma, falling in two of three contests to the Sooners over the weekend. Freshman utility man Kyle Davis leads the squad with a .368 batting average, 57 hits and 24 RBI. Getting the start for WVU against the Herd will be freshman right-hander Shane Ennis (4.35 ERA, 1-2, 4 GS, 20. 2 IP, 11 K, 8 BB). The Mountaineers own a team average of .280, and a squad ERA of 3.72.

Marshall will host C-USA-leading Middle Tennessee in a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston from Friday-Sunday.
