HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A three-run ninth inning by Ohio (18-12) left the Herd unable to retaliate in the final frame, as Marshall baseball (9-22) dropped a 4-2 contest Wednesday afternoon at the Kennedy Center Field in Huntington.
Sophomore Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) picked up two of the Herd's seven hits. Freshman Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.) made his third pitching appearance of the season, and in his longest career outing, the righty tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and picking up a strikeout.
Ohio got on the board in the third inning, after leadoff batter Manny DeJesus singled and scored later on a sacrifice fly.
Marshall then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) boarded on a single, and came around to score after senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) doubled him home.
The game then remained at a stalemate until the ninth, when a series of unfortunate events led to three runs for Ohio.
The Herd began to cut the lead, as senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) led off the inning with a single and then advanced on a wild pitch. After a groundout moved him to third, freshman Chad Roberts (Wilmington, Ohio) dropped a single perfectly into left field to score Diffenderfer, but Marshall was unable to continue the rally.
The Herd will next face Conference USA foe Charlotte when the team heads to Beckley, W.Va., for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 10 at Epling Stadium.
