HATTIESBURG, Miss. --
Superb fielding from the Southern Miss (26-16-1, 11-10 C-USA) defense combined with a complete game from starter Cody Carroll contributed to Marshall's (16-28, 8-14 C-USA) 6-0 defeat Friday at Pete Taylor Park.

The Herd was held to three hits in the contest, with junior Robert Fajardo (Miami) going 2-for-3 and classmate DJ Gee (Seattle) singled in the fourth for Marshall's first hit of the game and stole his eighth base of the season.

The Golden Eagles attacked early, with a single, error, and single to load the bases before another single through the left side gap brought in the first run of the game.

Herd starter Chase Boster (Stafford, Va.) settled after that, with three innings of three-up, three-down baseball.

Southern Miss added to its lead in the sixth, after a single and a homer put them up 3-0, and a sacrifice fly added a fourth Golden Eagles' run. A walk and another home run in the seventh supplied USM with its final two runs of the game.

Boster suffered his first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1 after allowing 10 hits in 6.1 innings with five runs.

Reliever Heston Van Fleet (Kingsville, Texas) fanned three of the four batters he faced in the eighth inning.

The Herd will return to Pete Taylor Park on Saturday for a 3 p.m. ET start.
