CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Marshall baseball (18-31, 10-17 C-USA) was unable to pull off the series sweep, falling 12-3 to Western Kentucky (24-26, 10-17 C-USA) Sunday at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston.
Despite the loss, Marshall still took the series, winning both Friday and Saturday's contests. It was the fourth series win in five weeks.
Freshman Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.) led the Herd offense, going 2-for-3, and junior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) cranked an RBI double in the first inning for MU. Four other Marshall players tallied hits during the game.
Marshall took an early 2-1 lead, but was unable to capitalize in later innings.
The Herd got on the board after leadoff man Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) boarded on a walk, advanced to second and then third on two groundouts, and then came home courtesy of Bossi's double.
Marshall plated a second run after Bossi moved to third on a wild pitch and pinch-hitter Billy Sager (Kenova, W.Va.) beat out an infield single to bring him home.
WKU got on the board first, when a two-out home run from third baseman Danny Hudzina was sent flying over the left field wall.
The Hilltoppers then tied the game in the fifth, and took the lead with a two-run sixth. Another two runs in the eighth added insurance for WKU, and a ninth inning explosion of six runs secured the 12-3 victory for the Toppers.
