HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- An eighth inning rally was cut short as Marshall baseball (16-30, 8-16 C-USA) suffered a 6-2 loss Sunday to Southern Miss (28-16-1, 13-10 C-USA).
Junior DJ Gee (Seattle) went 2-for-4 with a run, and senior Andrew Dundon (Lincoln Park, N.J.) made a return to the starting lineup Sunday, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Senior TJ Diffenderfer (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) cranked his team-leading 10th double of the season to bring in the first Herd run of the series.
The game started a pitchers' duel until the bottom of the fourth, when a walk, single, wild pitch, and sacrifice fly put Southern Miss on the board.
The Golden Eagles crossed the plate five times in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Corey Bird (Pinch, W.Va.) led things off with a walk, and moved up to second on Gee's single. Diffenderfer then smacked one off the wall in left field to send Bird home, and Dundon recorded a sacrifice fly for Gee to score Marshall's second run.
The Herd will return home for Finals Week, and then welcomes Conference USA newcomer Western Kentucky to Charleston for a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park beginning Friday, May 8.
