MIAMI - The Thundering Herd women's soccer team (4-6-4, 2-3-2) grabbed a point in Conference USA play as it drew FIU (2-8-3, 0-3-2), 1-1, Friday evening at the FIU Soccer Stadium.
The first half was a possession battle between the two sides. Senior midfielder Jordan Parkhurst had the first chance of the game in the fifth minute of play, but her shot was saved by FIU's goalkeeper. The rest of the first half would be a back-and-forth affair with the Herd holding a 6-3 shot advantage and both teams having one shot on a goal each, but neither side could break the deadlock after 45 minutes.
The second half began with junior goalkeeper Emily Moreland being called into action in the 47th minute. FIU sophomore Jacky Manteas tested Moreland, but the goalkeeper pushed the shot out for a corner kick. The corner kick would put FIU up 1-0 in the 47th minute. Manteas headed the corner into the opposite side of the goal to pick up her first goal of the season.
Marshall would not go down quietly. Freshman forward Jordan Sackaris equalized for the Herd in the 63rd minute to make the game 1-1. Marshall was attacking by the FIU penalty area before sophomore Shontelle Smith came up with the ball after a battle for the ball and found an open Sackaris on the right corner of the box. Sackaris fired from the corner and found the back of the net.
The goal gave Sackaris her seventh goal of the season, which is the first time a freshman has scored seven goals in a season since Amanda McMahon (2000-01) scored 14 in her debut season. Smith has also collected a point in three of the last four matches for the Herd.
Marshall would keep on pressing throughout the second half. Senior Sydney Arnold almost put the Herd up 2-1, but her shot was punched away by the FIU goalkeeper and gave the Herd a corner kick. Senior Kayla Byrnside then had an opportunity from the corner kick, but it was saved as well.
Both sides would finish 90 minutes tied 1-1 and send the game into overtime. The first period of overtime was a defensive battle between the two sides. Marshall out-shot FIU 1-0 in the first overtime period. Marshall would get a chance to grab the game-winning goal in the second overtime period with a shot from Parkhurst, but it was saved.
After 110 minutes of play the Herd out-shot FIU 22-11 and had an 11-6 shots on goal advantage, while Moreland grabbed five saves on the night.
