HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall volleyball's Madelyn Cole was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, as the Herd clinched a berth in the C-USA Tournament this past weekend.
"Madelyn did a wonderful job Sunday and it's great that the league is recognizing her for her play," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "There was a lot of pressure on her going into that big of a match and it was fantastic to see her handle it and exceed all expectations."
Cole certainly did exceed all expectations as she led Marshall with a career-high 55 assists in the four set win over the Florida Atlantic Owls. The win improved the Herd to an 18-7 overall record and 7-3 in C-USA, while snapping FAU's eight-match win streak. In C-USA, Cole's 55 assists is the second most in a four-set match this season and tied for third most in a league match. She added a combined 16 digs and five blocks this weekend against FAU and WKU.
The Dallas native leads the Herd this season with 543 assists, averaging 6.24 assists per set. Cole is fifth on the team in kills with 115 and third for digs with 172.
This is the first weekly award for Cole. Marshall has now won at least one award in seven out of 10 weeks this season, including five freshman of the week honors.
