Herd Track and Field Prepares for Home Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall Track and Field team competes Thursday at the Marshall Opener in its first indoor meet of the 2016-17 season. The meet will take place at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex.

The meet is the first of three home meets to take place on Marshall's campus. The Marshall Opener is a dual meet against Ohio University. This is the team's only meet in 2016, as they will not compete again until January 13, 2017 at the Kentucky Indoor Invitational in Lexington, Ky.

2016-17 PREVIEW
The team welcomes 17 new members to the team for the 2016-17 season. Four members (Mary Kerby, Audreana Lewis, Mikaela Mitchell, and Abigail Short) join the distance squad after already having a season of cross country under their belt. Megan Carter, a graduate transfer from Seaton Hill University, also joins the distance team.

The throws team welcomes freshmen Ericka Budd (Huntington, W.Va.), Jessica Hiteshew (Mt. Dora, Fla.), and transfers Reneese Batson (Iowa Central Community College) and Alexis Montes (graduate transfer-West Liberty University).

The sprinter squad gains four members. Freshman Kanani Collins (Richmond, Va.), Christiana Dougan (Tallahassee, Fla.), Andrea Hudson (University Heights, Ohio), and Danere'a White (Columbus, Ohio) all join the team.

The hurdles and jumps team added four members to its lineup. Freshmen Hannah Carreon (Core, W.Va.) and Safiyyah Mitchell (Huntington, W.Va.) join the team, as well as freshmen Torie Derrow (Glen Dale, W.Va and Denisha West (Old Westbury, N.Y.) who specialize more in jumps.

The team will be led by seven returning seniors in Antonique Butler, Kametra Byrd, Mercedes Dowell, Amber Govey, Hope Julmiste, Andrea Porter, and Danielle Wright.

Butler (Nassau, Bahamas) is coming off a very successful season in which she qualified for the NCAA East Regional in the triple jump.

After this home meet, the team will host two more indoor meets later in the season. The Thundering Herd Invitational will take place on January 27-28, 2017, while the Chipotle Marshall Invitational will take place two weeks later on February 10th and 11th.
