HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall track and field team completed day one of the Chipotle Marshall Invitational Friday at the Jeff Small Track at the Chris Cline Athletic Complex.
Marshall senior Alexandra Phares won the 5,000 meter run in her final home meet. Phares won by nearly five seconds, with a time of 17:56.87, a personal best by 25 seconds. Junior Amber Govey finished 16th with a time of 19:07.99, a new personal best as well.
The Herd broke a school record in the distance medley relay, shattering the old mark by more than eight seconds. The team of Madeline Armstrong, Makaylah Downour, Alexi McEntire and Andrea Porter ran a time of 12:11.91, beating the previous record (12:19.79) set in 1999.
In the women's weight throw, Herd freshman Hasana Clark placed sixth, with a throw of 17.22m, a personal best by more than three feet.
"What a great run for Alex, getting the win there and crushing her old personal best," Marshall coach Jeff Small said. "Hasana Clark has continued her recent run with a good performance in the weight throw. She keeps moving up both our school lists and the Conference USA lists, so that was great to see. Plus we beat the school record by eight seconds in the distance medley. All four of those kids ran really well, probably as well as they could have done at this point and time. So, it's been a really great start to the weekend."
Action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. A meet schedule is available here. Follow Herd track and field on Twitter, @HerdTFXC.
