On the final day of the series, Marshall showed perseverance after trailing 6-2 through two innings. The Herd rallied with a home run from Cory Garrastazu (Miami) and three RBIs from newcomer Sam Finfer (Bellevue, Wash.). In extra innings, Marshall was sparked by senior relief pitcher Sam Hunter (Ashland, Ky.), who led off the 12th inning with a single to right field. The Herd went on to score three runs to clinch a 11-9 victory.
QUICK HITTERS
Junior outfielder Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) is scheduled to play in his 100th game Friday for the Herd. Bird has a career batting average of .303 with 119 hits and 38 RBIs.
Heston Van Fleet (Kingsville, Texas), Patrick Murphy (Massillon, Ohio), Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.) and Caleb Ross (Barboursville, W.Va.) combined for 10 scoreless innings through 28 innings of work for the Herd. Van Fleet threw for 5.1 innings and only allowed two hits with seven strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Liberty enters this weekend with a 2-2 record, with the wins coming against William & Mary on Tuesday in its home opener and USF last Saturday. The Flames have been led by a pair of outfielders, D.J. Artis and Andrew Yacyk. Artis is hitting a team high .438 with seven hits and 14 total bases, while Yacyk leads the team with two home runs and seven RBIs.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
Coast Carolina, ranked No. 19 nationally, is coming off a strong showing its first tournament, as it defeated the defending NCAA champion Virginia Cavaliers, 5-4. The Chanticleers are led by junior G.K. Young, who has a .500 batting average through three games with seven RBIs. Coastal Carolina has six players hitting over .300.
