HAVE YOU HERD?
The Herd enters the weekend with a 9-6 record and a five-game win streak. Marshall has won eight of its last nine games, including a three-game sweep over Lehigh and a four-game sweep over Brown.
Pitching has been a strong contributor to the Herd's recent success as it went 22 consecutive innings of scoreless baseball this past week. After not allowing a run in the final three innings in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Brown, Marshall went on to shutout the Bears in following two games. The Herd didn't allow a run until the fourth inning on Tuesday against Morehead State. At home, Marshall's pitching has a 2.10 ERA through 90 innings pitched.
Marshall has been required to call upon its players for late-game heroics as it went 17 innings last Friday against Brown and then 12 innings on Tuesday against Morehead State. In the game against Brown, freshman Andrew Zban (Huntington, W.Va.) delivered the game-winning hit, which was his first collegiate hit. On Tuesday against the Eagles, Tommy Lane (Pendleton, Ore.) did what he does best and hit a deep home run to left-center field for the walk-off home run.
WHAT'S AT STAKE
- Marshall is on a five-game win streak, it's longest since the 2014 season when they defeated UTSA in the final game of a three-game series and then swept a four-game series against WVU Tech.
- Sam Finfer (Bellevue, Wash.) and Lane are on a 15 and 13 reached base streak, respectively.
- Lane has a 13-game hit streak that begun in the Herd's final game at Florida A&M on Sunday, Feb. 21.
- Zban has a five-game hit streak and reached base streak.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Southern Miss enters this weekend with a 14-4 overall record and has won three out of its last five games. The Golden Eagles are coming off a three-game series win over Samford by taking two out of three. On Tuesday, Southern Miss defeated Alabama, 9-2.
Leading at the plate is Jake Sandlin, who is 25-for-64 (.391 BA) with three doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 RBIs. Tim Lynch leads the Golden Eagles in RBIs with 19.
