Morehead State Powers Past @HerdBaseball

MOREHEAD, Ky. - A five-run first inning by the Morehead State Eagles (16-9) set the tone for the 13-0 setback by the Marshall Thundering Herd baseball (13-10) on Wednesday at Allen Field.
The Eagles came out swinging to begin the ballgame as it put five runs across the plate, and all coming with two outs. Reid Leonard singled up the middle with runners on the corners to score Will Schneider from third. Jesus Carrera followed with a single to right field that scored Trevor Snyder from second. In the ensuing at-bat, Hunter Fain hit a three-run home run.
Morehead State kept the pressure on in the second inning by tacking on three runs in the inning. Snyder hit the Eagles second three-run home run of the day with two outs to put their lead to eight.
Starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro (Columbus, Ohio) settled down to throw three scoreless innings after allowing the eight runs. Shapiro's day was done in the sixth inning when Morehead added two more runs in the inning off a double and a single.
Morehead State went on to add three more runs in the bottom of the eighth off relief pitcher Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.).
Ratliff led the way for the Thundering Herd at the plate with a 3-for-3 day. It was the sophomore's first three-hit game of the season. Sam Finfer (Bellevue, Wash.) and Tommy Lane (Pendleton, Ore.) each had two hits. Lane has now reached base safely in 21 straight games.
On the mound, Shapiro (0-2) went 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Wade Martin (Portsmouth, Ohio) tossed 1.1 innings with no hits allowed and one strikeout. Ratliff went one inning with three earned runs.
Morehead State's Kyle Humphreys moves to 4-2 with the win.
Up next, Marshall heads to Charleston, W.Va., for a three-game series against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (14-7, 3-3 C-USA), beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Herd is scheduled for games Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
