LEADING OFF
- After being held hitless against Florida A&M, Leo Valenti bounced back in the second weekend with four hits during eight at-bats against Liberty and 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina. Valenti went 2-for-3 against the Chanticleers last Friday, and had a solo home run against the Flames.
- Junior Tommy Lane has been the biggest contributor for the Herd this season --- 10-for-27 (.370). Lane, who homered in his first Marshall at-bat, also has two doubles and seven RBIs.
- Coach Jeff Waggoner is in his 10th season guiding the Herd. Waggoner is two wins shy of 200 for his career and is the second winningest coach in Marshall history, trailing only Jack Cook (23 seasons, 422 victories).
- Marshall bats have been alive through six games with five homers, good for third in Conference USA. The Herd trails Southern Miss (15) and WKU (6), while tied with UTSA and Old Dominion. Cory Garrastazu leads MU with two home runs. Lane, Valenti and Tyler Ratliff have one apiece.
- During last weekend's trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., DJ Gee batted .308 in 13 at-bats with two doubles for three RBIs. Gee, who has started every game in left field for the Herd, has a perfect fielding percentage.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN HAWKS
Lehigh enters this weekend series 3-0, The Mountain Hawks opened Feb. 21-22 with a three-game sweep at Norfolk State. Lehigh was originally scheduled to play on Wednesday at Coppin State, but rain canceled the contest.
Leading the way for the Mountain Hawks is Patrick Donnelly, who is batting .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles and five RBIs. Lehigh has four players hitting over .400, but no other Hawks are hitting at least .300. Defensively, Lehigh hasn't made an error this season.
The series marks the first scheduled meeting between Marshall and Lehigh.
