HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall baseball (19-15, 8-7 C-USA) opens up a three-game Conference USA series at Charlotte (16-22, 6-9 C-USA) on Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and Sunday's game is at 1 p.m.
ON THE MOUND

FIRST RANKED WIN IN THREE YEARS
Marshall won its first game over a ranked opponent since the 2013 season on Sunday with a 7-2 win over the 16th-ranked Florida Atlantic. The Thundering Herd defeated No. 19 Houston in a Conference USA series in 2013. The Herd played 21st-ranked Coastal Carolina earlier this year, but its bid to upset them fell short.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall's 19 wins through 34 games this season is the best start since 2001. The Herd will have its opportunity this weekend to put itself in more rarefied air. If Marshall wins two of three against the 49ers, it will match the best start since 1988. If the Herd picks up the sweep, it will be the best start since 1981.
The tandem of junior Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) and DJ Gee (Seattle) are terrors for opposing pitchers on the basepaths. Bird leads Conference USA with 19 stolen bases, while Gee is tied for second with 15. Bird ranks 22nd in the nation in stolen bases.
SCOUTING THE 'NINERS
Charlotte enters the weekend after dropping an 8-4 decision in a midweek game against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C. The 49ers have lost four of their last five games, including two to Middle Tennessee last weekend. The 'Niners are 10-14 at home this season.
Charlotte is led by five players with a batting average over .300. Brett Netzer leads the way with a .367 batting average and 24 RBIs. Logan Sherer has a team-high 39 RBIs and eight home runs.
ON DECK
After the weekend series, Marshall heads north to Morgantown to wrap up its season series against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Herd dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings earlier this season to WVU.
