CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Marshall baseball (20-15, 9-7 C-USA) took the three-game series advantage with a 7-2 win in game one against the Charlotte 49ers (16-23, 6-10 C-USA) on Friday night at Hayes Stadium.
Senior Chase Boster dominated play on the mound for the Herd. The Stafford, Va., native went seven innings with one earned run on six hits. Boster tied a career-high in strikeouts with seven.
The Thundering Herd got things rolling in the top of the third with a DJ Gee (Seattle) double to right field that scored Leo Valenti (Olympia, Wash.) and Robert Fajardo (Miami). Charlotte was able to respond in the ensuing half inning with a single through the right side that scored one.
Senior Aaron Bossi (St. Louis) opened up the game in the top of the fifth with a bases loaded double down the left field line that cleared the bases for the Herd.
Marshall added two more insurance runs in the following inning. Junior Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) singled through the left side with two outs to score Tyler Ratliff (Alexandria, Va.) and Fajardo.
The 49ers added a run in the bottom half of the eighth off a triple down the left field line.
Senior Caleb Ross (Barboursville, W.Va.) went on to end the game in the ninth for the Herd, as he got the `Niners to ground out into a double play.
Marshall and Charlotte were tied in hits with nine. Bossi, Fajardo and Gee led the way for the Herd with two hits each. All three combined for the Herd's three extra base hits.
In relief for Boster was Heston Van Fleet (Kingsville, Texas) and Ross. Van Fleet and Ross each went an inning.
Third baseman Derek Gallello was 1-for-2 for the `Niners with a RBI. Starting pitcher Sean Geoghegan (2-5) picked up the loss.

COACH'S CORNER
Quotes from Head Coach Jeff Waggoner
On Chase Boster...
"Great leadership by Chase Boster. He just came out and pitched really well. He had all three pitches working for him that he could throw in any count. He was put into some tough situations throughout the game, and he pitched his way out of it. He really showed his maturity as a senior, and he gave us a chance to win the game."
On the offense...
"I thought overall that our hitters did a great job with runners in scoring position. We had a game plan coming into today and the team stuck with it. They put some really good swings on with runners in scoring position, and did a great job getting those runners in."
