HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall baseball (24-17, 13-8 Conference USA) is set to battle the UAB Blazers (19-25, 10-11 C-USA) this weekend in a three-game series at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, W.Va., beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m.
ON THE MOUND
Friday: Chase Boster (4-2, 4.28 ERA) vs. Kyle Davis (2-0, 0.87 ERA)
Saturday: Parker Danciu (3-3, 6.38 ERA) vs. Tanner Graham (3-5, 4.33 ERA)
Sunday: JD Hammer (3-2, 5.29 ERA) vs. Ryan Ruggles (5-3, 3.30 ERA)
RAISING AWARENESS
Marshall baseball will raise awareness to many types of cancer this weekend by wearing specialized hats with stitched-in ribbons that they've been affected by. Marshall student-athletes and coaches will bring awareness to Ovarian, Brain, Prostate, Breast, Melanoma, Lung, Lymphoma, Colon, Pancreatic, Bladder, Stomach and Leukemia cancer.
On Saturday, $1 of every ticket purchased will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
WHERE WE RANK
The Thundering Herd is in fourth place of the Conference USA standings, with a game up on fifth-place Louisiana Tech and a game behind Florida Atlantic. Marshall sits at No. 89 in the RPI by the NCAA, good for sixth in C-USA.
A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER
The Thundering Herd earned its first Conference USA sweep since 2010, while it's was the team's first road conference series sweep since 2006. Marshall notched 13 wins in C-USA for the first time since joining the league in the 2005-06 season.
Marshall's 25 runs against the Blue Raiders is a new school record for the most runs in any league game. It was previously a 24-16 Mid-American Conference win over Toledo in 1963. The run total is tied for No. 4 for most runs scored in a game in Thundering Herd history.
ON THE CALL
Games this weekend against the Blazers can be heard on the Thundering Herd IMG Sports Network with Steve Cotton and Woody Woodrum on ESPN Radio FMs 93.3 and 94.1, and also on AMs 930 and 1340.
SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
UAB enters the series coming off a midweek split against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Blazers took the first game with a 6-3 decision, while dropped the second game, 12-3. Senior outfielder Griffin Gum had a grand slam in game one.
Brewer Hicklen and Carter Pharis have played in all 44 games for the Blazers. Hicklen leads the team by batting .300 with 23 RBIs, while Pharis is hitting .287 with a team-high 13 doubles.
UP NEXT
After the weekend series, Marshall heads to north for a midweek matchup against the Ohio Bobcats on Tuesday at 6 p.m. This will be the 162nd meeting between the Herd and Bobcats.
